Santa Cruz, CA

Designed and engineered by Daniel Matthew Silvernail Architect, this 2,600 square foot home for an extended family stands as testimony to our collaborative efforts. The original bungalow was cramped with a floor plan layout much in need of improvement, so the program brief speficied rectifying the deficiencies in the plan plus addition of a second floor.

Not a trivial matter, this addition required upgrades to the structural system of the home and upgrades to its foundation. On the inside, the remodel resulted in a more commodious kitchen, and more spacious and livable interior spaces overall.

Opening up the old walls downstairs allowed daylight to flood into long-dark rooms at the lower floor. Upper rooms, open to three sides, avails themselves of distant views including glimpses of Monterey Bay. Finally, separate exterior decks incorporated into the second floor addition give family members dedicated outdoor spaces to nurture outdoor living “above it all,” carefully designed to ensure complete privacy.
